Sardar Patel was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. At the age of just 13, he was married to Jhaver Ba. Jhaver could not stay with Sardar Patel for long.

Sardar Vallabhai Patel studied law from England and then returned to India in the year 1913. Soon he gathered his advocacy here. Sardar was greatly influenced by the Satyagraha of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1918, farmers in Kheda in Gujarat were unable to pay taxes due to the drought.

Sardar Patel could have been the first Prime Minister of the country. But, on the instruction of Mahatma Gandhi, he withdrew his name from this claim and Jawaharlal Nehru became the Prime Minister.

Sardar Patel's life was very simple. It is said that he did not even have a house of his own and he lived in a rented house in Ahmedabad. He expired on 15 December 1950 in Mumbai. It is said that when he died, only 260 rupees were present in his bank account.
